Wolcott, United States – July 26, 2018 —

With Goldendoodles showing up at nearly every street corner across the US, their biddable, calm, sensible demeanor and high intelligence shines as they stroll with their owners from all walks of life. The Goldendoodle, a Designer Dog which is a combination of the Golden Retriever and Poodle breeds, almost unknown in the United States 10 years ago, has enjoyed an explosion of popularity in the recent years.

Sunshine Acres, a Goldendoodle Breeder since 2002, was one of the first to raise Goldendoodles in the Midwest. Michael Wagenbach, owner of Sunshine Acres, has taken his experience with genetics at Iowa State University, and focused on incorporating a third breed into his Goldendoodles to increase genetic diversity thereby reducing the risk of health challenges in his puppies.

Since the lovable Golden Retriever breed was originally composed of individuals from the Curly and Flat Coated Retrievers, Tweed Water Spaniel and Irish Setter breeds, Wagenbach went back to the Irish Setter breed to bring genetic diversity to his Goldendoodle lines. The Irish Setter breed has fewer inherent genetic defects than the Golden Retriever and Poodle breeds, so the puppy created from the combination of all three breeds is also at a reduced risk for genetic health challenges. In the purebred Golden Retriever population, cancer, hip and elbow dysplasia, eye, and heart diseases are prevalent. But in the purebred Irish Setter population, cancer, elbow dysplasia, and congenital cardiac problems are greatly reduced health risks compared to the purebred Golden Retrievers. The result of a 2012 study by the University of Cambridge shows a purebred Golden Retriever is 1.4 times more likely to die from cancer than a purebred Irish Setter.

According to Wagenbach, “The Irish Goldendoodle, as the new three-way-hybrid Goldendoodle is called, has proven to be a higher health Goldendoodle which expresses similar personality, temperament and trainability traits as the Goldendoodle. With improved coat quality, due to a reduction in undercoat, and the same teddy bear appearance, the Irish Goldendoodle is a show stopper in its dark mahogany to red-gold coat.”

By carefully selecting each purebred Golden Retriever, Poodle and Irish Setter parent from quality lines, with appropriate health testing for their breed, Sunshine Acres offers the new, 3-way hybrid Irish Goldendoodle puppies for sale to families who want puppies with an improved chance of a long, healthy life.
